  • Sermion (Nicergolina) and Ginkgo biloba

An ENT doctor suggests Sermion (Nicergoline) 30 mg 1x1 or Ginkgo biloba 40 mg 1x1 for a mother with a 6-month-old infant), please suggest breastfeeding management for this case. Thank you very much.

We do not have data on either of these, unfortunately. Based on the kinetics of Nicergoline, it appears that will will transfer into milk. Since it causes the blood to become thinner in the person taking it, one would assume that it has the potential to do the same thing to an infant if exposed. Ginkgo has been used by some during lactation, but there is no evidence based data to determine safety.
We suggest weighing the risk versus benefits carefully in this case understanding that both options could potentially cause increased bleeding risk in the infant.
