  • Zofran while breastfeeding

I am 7 weeks pregnant nursing my 8 month old. With my 8 month old I suffered from HG, so at the glimpse of sickness a few days ago I decided to start taking some Zofran I had left over. Is Zofran safe to take while continuing breastfeeding?? I’ve only taken 2 doses so far, 4mg every 12 hours.

Hi! This one should be ok to take while breastfeeding. It is rated a L2. Zofran is secreted in rodent milk, but no data in humans are available. However, based on this medication's shorter half-life, larger volume of distribution and moderate oral bioavailability we predict a relatively small exposure to the infant via breast milk. Watch your baby for: Sedation, irritability, diarrhea or constipation, urinary retention.

Zofran is rated L2-probably compatible. This should be ok for occasional use while breastfeeding. We do not know exactly how much transfers into breastmilk, but according to our data (Hale's Medication and Mother's Milk) this medication has a short half-life, large volume of distribution, and a moderate oral bioavailability which would lead to a small exposure to the infant via breastmilk. We recommend to try taking after you nurse baby and monitor baby for sedation, diarrhea, constipation, and urinary retention.
