  • Low dose aspirin

    Hello,
I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and have been prescribed a daily 81 mg aspirin due to previous preeclampsia. I am still breastfeeding my 8 month old. Is it necessary to wait a certain amount of time after taking the aspirin before breastfeeding or to cease breastfeeding if she is sick due to possible Reye’s syndrome concerns. Any helps would be so appreciated. Thank you!

    Mommyto2:

We just published data on Aspirin into human milk. No acetylsalicylic acid gets into human milk from 81 or 325 mg doses.
It seems all the aspirin is sequestered in the liver before it gets to the blood compartment. We did find its metabolite salicylic acid, but its not a problem.

I would not worry at all about breastfeeding while consuming aspirin at the 81 mg dose.

is this also true for a double dose of baby aspirin? So 162? I’d like to continue breastfeeding if I become pregnant again, but know I will be prescribed it and new research shows the double dose is more effective.
