  • Concerned about amalgam removal

I went to the dentist today to have two cavities filled. I was unaware that one of the cavities was under an old amalgam filling so the dentist proceeded to remove it. They were aware I am breastfeeding. I later read all the protocols that should be followed online when removing amalgam fillings and I am now panicked. There was no copious amounts of water, no rubber dam and no alternate source of oxygen etc. used. My daughter is 2 years old and we are still breastfeeding multiple times a day and now I am at a loss as of what to do. Should I have a blood test for mercury for myself and/or her? How serious of a problem is this?

    Kas523,

I think you and your toddler are probably ok. We are exposed to mercury through fish consumption and certain light bulbs on a regular basis, one filling is probably not a problem.
