Herbal supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA); therefore, there is a lack of information on their safety during breastfeeding. Many herbal supplements are safe but some are unsafe for breastfeeding mothers. Dr. Hale suggests to consult an authority in herbal products before ingesting these drugs while pregnant or breastfeeding. Green coffee bean extract contains caffeine. We know that 6% to 25.9% of the maternal dose of caffeine enters breastmilk. High doses can lead to irritability and insomnia in the breastfed infant. There are some reports of reduced iron content in milk when caffeine is used chronically. Due to the lack of safety information, we do not recommend use of herbal supplements, colon cleanse products during breastfeeding.
