  • Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract

I received a call yesterday from a mom questioning the safety of green coffee bean extract. Apparently Dr. Oz mentioned it on his show as a way to lose weight with no other dieting/change needed. When I called the IRC I was told this was contraindicated due to the natural caffeine content, the potential for low blood sugar and low blood pressure in both mom and infant. Is there an age of infant where this supplement would be acceptable, such as a nursing toddler? The mother has a 7 month old she plans to nurse until age 2 and wanted to know if this supplement would be safe/safer to use when the child only nurses a few times a day and is better able to handle/metabolize caffeine.

I would appreciate any info or elaboration you can offer, since usually with things relating to Dr. Oz we will get multiple questions about this supplement across a wide range of infant ages and circumstances.

    Ingrid:

It appears that the caffeine content in the bean is not overly high. That said, you always have to evaluate caffeine with the infant in mind. Does it keep your baby awake, alert all day, etc? You have to make your decision concerning caffeine individually. In your case, with a 7 month old infant, this infant will probably not respond too much to this clinical dose at this time.

As for the other components in green coffee bean, I would be somewhat concerned with a breastfeeding infant. This product contains a major amount of chlorogenic acid, which is known to have a number of biologic repercussions, such as hypoglycemia, and inhibition of glucose-6-phosphate. This ultimately reduces hepatic glycogenolysis and reduces plasma glucose levels. While effective for a diabetic, it might be problematic for an infant.

I would suggest this product is somewhat risky for a breastfeeding mother and her infant.

        Dear jlist,

Herbal supplements and remedies are currently not recommended for use during pregnancy. A physician or herbal specialist should be consulted before beginning any herbal treatment during pregnancy or lactation. Common herbal products that should be avoided during pregnancy include: ashwagandha, bitter melon, black cohosh, burdock, cats claw, celery, chamomile, chasteberry, devil's claw, ephedra, feverfew, panax ginseng, golden seal, gotu kola, hawthorn, kava kava, licorice, red clover, red yeast rice, rosemary, schisandra, St. John's wort, stinging nettle, tribulus, uva ursi, and yohimbe. While green coffee bean extract is not on the list to be avoided during pregnancy, we do not recommend herbal supplements due to lack of data. They are not evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Some of these extracts contain caffeine. Caffeine does not appear to increase the risk of birth defects but prolonged use of caffeine can result in withdrawal symptoms in mothers and babies. Due to the risk of withdrawal symptoms, the recommendation of limiting caffeine consumption to less than 300 mg/day has been proposed in the scientific literature. If you have further questions, please call the InfantRisk Center at 806-352-2519. We are open Monday through Friday, 8 to 5, CDT.

        Sincerely,

            Hearts:

I'd suggest your infant is old enough to tolerate your consumption of green coffee. If he gets hyper or insomnic, then you'll know the caffeine is keeping him up.

                Dear Litsaki,

I think that your milk supply is probably very small by now, but I still cannot advise you to use this supplement. Simply because we do not have any studies on it, and i can not completely rule out any risk to your son. supplements can have a really high dose of green coffee, it can make your son hyper or insomnic.

I am also interested in using green coffee bean. I am currently nursing my 19month old twins roughly 2xs a week. We are trying to wean them but it is taking forever. I was wondering if I could take the green coffee supplement when not breastfeeding? I was also thinking about maybe the garcinia cambogia. I wouldn't take both; it would be one or the other. In either case do u think a weight loss supplement like these could be used on days I am not breastfeeding?
