  • Maca- Lepidium meyenii and breastfeeding

I have a nursing mom (induced lactation for adopted daughter) who wants to start Maca for libido. I can only find a reference in the 2006 Natural Medicines database stating there is insufficient reliable evidence for it's use. Anyone with more information?

    Hi, thanks for your post.

We have no information in our database regarding Maca root, nor do we have any anecdotes from our call center at any point in the last 4 years. There are no published studies exploring Maca's safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding. There is one small study from 2008 (cited below) suggesting that high-dose Maca root is effective in relieving the sexual side effects of SSRIs.

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if we can help you any further.*(806)352-2519
