  • Cocaine and breastfeeding

    Hello,
Over the weekend I went out for a birthday party. I had quite a few drinks and ended up taking two lines of cocaine. I had planned to bottle feed my baby the next day but he refused so I gave in and fed him. It would have only been about 5 or so hours after the cocaine line and 3 hours after my last drink. I hate myself and will not do this again but am hoping to get advice on just how much damage could have been done to my baby with this volume of cocaine. It’s been over 24 hours and he has been totally fine but I just feel so anxious and concerned.

    Hello,

Cocaine does pass into milk and using cocaine while breastfeeding is dangerous. It’s challenging to fully assess the potential impact without knowing your baby’s age and health status, but the period of highest risk has already passed. If an infant were to experience acute symptoms—such as increased heart rate, agitation, or choking—they would likely have become apparent shortly after the exposure. While long-term effects are unlikely from a single exposure, cocaine may remain detectable in your baby’s system for a while (they would have a positive drug screen).

In general, we recommend pumping and discarding your milk for 24 hours after cocaine use (it's not the first time we've heard of similar stories). Please consider consulting a healthcare professional for personalized advice and further support.

It’s been 48 hours now. My baby is 9 weeks. He had a small vomit just now but I can’t say if that’s just from feeding. I think it might be. He hasn’t done it again and seems calm/not agitated.

Just so I understand: In the first 24 hours after exposure, if you were to continue feeding would the drug continue to build up in the baby even if it was starting to leave my system?

And confirming the riskiest time would be in that first 24 hours? Is it safe to say he should remain fine now that it’s been over 48 hours or can symptoms come on later?

it was not a large amount of the drug but because I had alcohol as well I know that makes it more risky.
