  • Malarone

Hello, I am a US resident and will be traveling to Kenya in mid-April. My toddler will be 20 months old; her last weight was 21lbs 10oz on 3/6. We nurse 2x/day for maybe 5-10 minutes each time for comfort. I've been directed to take Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil) to prevent malaria. Do I need to avoid nursing for any length of time while taking it?

    Thank you!

    Tapper:

We have absolutely no data on malarone and its transfer to milk. We think its going to be low. Further, a 20 month old infant probably needs to be treated with something as well to prevent malaria. I'd go to the CDC website and find information on protecting your infant. The small amounts of Malarone in milk are NOT enough to protect your infant.
