  • Maxzide and phendimetrazine

Hello, I have a client with a 13 month old who nurses twice daily with a cardiac condition (hypertension and bradycardia) whose doctor wants her to start maxzide and phendimetrazine 35mg. There is no information on phendimetrazine in MMM or in your archives. Can you comment on using these drugs while breastfeeding?
    Thank you,
    Annie Brown, LLL Leader

    Dear Annie,
It is probably safe to continue breastfeeding while taking these medications. Phendimetrazine is similar to amphetamines and therefore the child needs to be monitored for agitation, insomnia, and anorexia. For more information, call the infantrisk center at (806)352-2519. Hope this helps.
    Sincerely,
    Maria Milla, MD
