  • Link between Verapamil and infant colic symptoms?

I have a breastfeeding mom in my practice who is taking verapamil. Her 2 month old infant has severe GERD symptoms and cries excessively (at least 10 hours a day). This mom's first child had similar symptoms while she was breastfed. My question is, although Verapamil is a L1 category safety for breastfeeding, are you aware of any anectdotal reports of verapamil in breastmilk causing extreme GERD and colic in babies?
    Thank you.

    rainbow00:

I can find nothing to suggest that gastric upset in an infant is related to the small amounts of verapamil in breastmilk. One of the rarer side effects in adults taking it orally, is gastric upset, but its a rare complication.

I'd suggest something else is going on and a good pediatrician, or a pediatric gastroenterologist might need be consulted.
