Dear Murphy,
Zyrtec (cetirizine) is one of the preferred antihistamines during breastfeeding since it is non-sedating. Animal studies suggest that three percent of the maternal dose enters breastmilk. The time the medication is highest in breastmilk is the first one and one-half hours after the dose, so the mother should avoid breastfeeding during that time. She should observe her infant for sedation.
Sincerely,
Cindy Pride, MSN, CPNP
