  • Which med for chest cold

Which cough medicine is the safest and won't effect milk supply? Basically I have a productive cough and want something that will help clear out the mucous.
    Thanks!

    Kate:

The only OTC cough medicine that is available contains dextromethorphan, which in reality is not very effective. It is however, safe to use in breastfeeding mothers at proper doses on the bottle.

Codeine in small doses 5-10 mg works really well, but its only available by prescription.

What about guaifenisan? That was what my midwife recommended. Thanks!

        Kate:

GUAIFENESIN is just an expectorant. It is believed, although not really proven, to increase the fluidity of mucous in the lung. When used with a lot of water, it might help break up congestion in the lung and liquify mucous. It does not suppress the cough reflex.
