  • Xyzal (Levocetirizine)

Question. My allergist wants me to take Xyzal (Levocetirizine) instead of Claritin to prevent hives that I have gotten in the past. Can this be taken during breastfeeding? I’m still nursing my 13 month old.

    Sara:

Levocetirizine is a third-generation non-sedating antihistamine. It is the active metabolite (L-enantiomer) of cetirizine. It has twice the binding affinity at the H1-receptor compared to cetirizine. No data on the transfer to human milk are available at this time.

Just as with cetirizine, it is probably compatible with breastfeeding. Just observe for sedation in infant.
