Lisa:
Milnacipran is a selective serotonin & norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that is used in the treatment of fibromyalgia. It potentiates the serotonergic and and noradrenergic activity in the CNS. The drug can cause serotonin syndrome. Some of the common side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, hypertension, tachycardia and palpitations. Milnacipran can also cause elevated liver enzymes. Animal studies show the drug is secreted into rat milk.
Milnacipran is an SSRNI similar to others for use in patients with fibromyalgia. No data yet are available for its transfer into human milk, but it will probably be similar to others in this class.
