I have lupus so experience side effects and sensitivities to SSRI's and most other antidepressants, not to mention other "mood stabilizers" etc. (I have tried them all over the years :P) I have postpartum depression and severe anxiety and would like to try vilazodone (Viibryd). Any news on if it is safe for breastfeeding?

    Lavinialuna:

Vilazodone is just another SSRI with partial activity on another serotonin receptor site. We have absolutley no data on its transfer into human milk. However, thus far, we don't have any SSRI that transfers into milk at levels greater than about 8% of the maternal dose. If I were to guess, I'd suggest this product enters milk modestly as it has a 99% protein binding.

But I can't really advise you that its totally safe for a breastfed infant, but I imagine its quite similar to all the rest of the SSRI family, which are quite safe for breastfeeding infants.
