    Information regarding Buspirone

    Hi there! I am working with a mother who is having severe panic attacks. Her doctor prescribed her 2.5 mg of Buspar (Buspirone) 2x a day. Her daughter nurses only twice a day. The doctor told her she must wean, but neither mom nor baby are truly ready. I have your 2006 edition of the Medications and Mother's Milk book, but it seems as if there isn't much research on this medication. I was hoping there may be more info regarding the use of this medication while breastfeeding.

    If not, are there other options that would be considered safer for her that I could have her bring to her doctor to review in her case?

    Your are correct that we have no data on the transfer of this drug into human milk. That said, this is the least sedating of all the anxiolytic drugs, and has very few side effects. For an infant breastfeeding only twice per day, there would be virtually no risk. If this drug works for the mom, I think it would be the ideal medication for both.
