  • Lexapro

I just got a call from a grandmother (calling on behalf of her daughter) who had questions about her daughter taking Lexapro and breastfeeding her preemie. The baby was born at 27 weeks and is now 1 week. The mom has been told by the hospital that she will not be able to give the baby breastmilk until he is at 9 weeks because she is on Lexapro. The mother is very upset about this. She is pumping now but wants to give her baby breastmilk as soon as she can. Any thoughts?

    Lexapro

    Dear Sharon,
Do you know if this mother was taking Lexapro while she was pregnant? If so, the amount the baby was exposed to in utero is a lot more than what he or she will be getting from breastfeeding. Further, this baby will be closely monitored in the NICU and they can monitor for signs of sedation or apnea. These are the side effects to watch for in an infant of a mother taking Lexapro. If these occur, then it is recommended the mom stop breastfeeding. However, it is up to the physician to allow breastfeeding or not. Hope this helps.
