  • Zoloft and withdrawal symptoms in baby

Dr. Hale, Have you found that babies whose mothers use Zoloft and breastfeed have any withdrawal symptoms if mother stops providing breastmilk to the baby?

    Leanne:

We know that early postpartum, there is about a 30% risk of withdrawal in infants exposed during pregnancy. I have not yet heard of a case where the infant withdrew following exposure to these drugs via breast milk.

There is so little in breastmilk, that I seriously doubt infants would go through a withdrawal, but its possible with some that have higher milk levels like, Prozac, and Effexor.

There is so little Zoloft in milk, I would doubt one would ever see a withdrawal in an infant exposed only during breastfeeding.
