  • St John's Wort - 4 Month Old

Is St. John's Wort considered compatible with breastfeeding? I have had negative experiences with zoloft and other antidepressants in the past, so I am trying to avoid that route, if possible. My midwife and therapist recommended St. John's Wort, but I want to confirm its safety before I give it a try.

    Thank You

    Hi, thanks for your post.

Yes, St. John's Wort is compatible with breastfeeding. There have been a few cases of excessive sleepiness in breastfed babies that has been attributed to the herb, but this is a rare occurrence. Herbal products are not regulated in the United States, so you should be very careful that what you buy actually contains St. John's Wort.

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question.*(806)352-2519
