I've got a prescription to start 5mg of Prozac for three days, increasing to 10mg to start treating ppd. This is just a start, and my doctor may increase the dosage if 10mg is not helping. I am breastfeeding a 3-month-old. Is it safe? I've previously tried zoloft but could not tolerate even 12.5mg due to nausea.

Hi, thanks for your post.
Fluoxetine (Prozac) has been used in perhaps a million mothers over the last 2 decades. While there are some reports of complications, but they are generally minimal and may actually be due to withdrawal from fluoxetine exposure in the womb rather than direct problems with the medication. Overall, fluoxetine is quite suitable for breastfeeding mothers and their infants. Remember, the risk of untreated depression is far higher than the risks of this medication.
Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question.*(806)352-2519
