  • Multiple antidepressants and breastfeeding

I have a 6m old who is breastfed (with small amounts of pureed food recently started). I take 40 mg of Celexa, 300 mg of Wellbutrin XR, and 50 mg of Lamictal daily. I took all three of these medications throughout my pregnancy and baby has been developing and growing well. My questions is this. I would like to increase my Lamictal to 75 mg daily to hopefully decrease worsening depression symptoms. My psychiatrist is aware of this and says it *should* be safe, as many breastfeeding women are on much higher doses for treatment of epilepsy, but I am wondering if being on multiple meds changes this. Thank you for your help.

If your infant is doing well on your current doses a small increase of 25mg of the Lamictal should not be a problem. Monitor your infant for sedation or irritability, not waking to feed/poor feeding, weight gain and rash. Based on clinical symptoms some infants may require monitoring of liver enzymes or CBC.
