  • Klonopin low dose and breastfeeding

A mother I'm working with is taking Klonopin .5 mg at night for sleep and is being told she cannot breastfeed. She is pumping a few times/day and only getting several ml per pumping session from both breasts. She would like to offer her breast 1-2x/day. In these circumstances, could she not breastfeed briefly for infant's comfort? Baby is 1.5 mos old, and being bottle fed formula. She so needs this contact with her baby. Thank you. Would appreciate a response from Dr Hale, if feasible.

There is no reason this mom cannot breastfeed. With such low milk transfer to the infant ( once or twice daily), there wouldn't be enough clonazepam to be clinically relevant.
