  • Imipramine and Breast Feeding

I have been prescribed Imipramine 20mg once a day for anxiety and .5mg Xanax twice a day as required. I breastfeed my 12 month old twice a day. Is the use of imipramine safe?

    Dear RKZK,

Imipramine levels in breastmilk are minimal and therefore, appears to be compatible with breastfeeding. The first two hours after you take your dose is when imipramine is highest in your breastmilk, so try to avoid breastfeeding during that time. Observe your infant for sedation and dry mouth. Alprazolam (Xanax) also may cause sedation so your infant observe your infant. The time Xanax is highest in your breastmilk is the first two hours after your dose, so again try to avoid that time if possible. Since your infant is older and also doesn't breastfeed often, the risk is decreased for him/her. If you have further questions, please call the InfantRisk Center at 806-352-2519. We are open Monday through Friday, 8 to 5 CDT.

    Sincerely,
