I'm finishing a 7 day course of 500MG Metronidazole plus 500MG Ciprofloxacin tomorrow. I've been pumping with a manual pump and dumping, but have hardly been able to express anything out at all. Assuming there's still milk in there that I just can't express, how long before it's safe to resume breastfeeding? Will my body metabolize whatever's still in there and how long will that take?

Dear mphwanga,
Both metronidazole and ciprofloxacin, at the doses you have listed, are compatible with breastfeeding, so we don't recommend pumping and discarding while on these medications. The time the drugs are highest in your breastmilk will be 2 to 4 hours after you take your doses so try to avoid breastfeeding during that time. If you want to wait until half of the medications are metabolized out of your system waiting 8 hours would be sufficient. If you want to wait until all of the medications are out of your system, waiting 48 hours should be sufficient.
Sincerely,
Cindy Pride, MSN, CPNP
