Is it true that this antibiotic is not recommended when breastfeeding?

    Tricia:

This is not a good choice for a breastfeeding mother. While the levels in milk are quite low, 3 to 8.5% of the maternal dose, there are complications from minimal exposure to Chloramphencol, such as blood dyscrasias, etc.

I would not recommend breastfeeding while on this product. Part of the problem is that when this drug is used, in patients exposed to it previously, it has a higher rate of blood dyscrasias and aplastic anemia, blood syndromes that are very dangerous.

Thus, exposing your infant to this low level, could make it a very risky product to use later in life for the infant.
