I've been diagnosed with BV and prescribed Clindamycin Phosphate 2% Gel. I can't seem to find any information on the gel and compatibility with breastfeeding. Are topical antibiotics an issue? It's supposed to be inserted vaginally - I asked the pharmacist and he said it crosses the mucous membrane and therefore would probably show up in my breastmilk, but to what extent? Is there sth else I should ask for instead? The lactation guide has clindamycin at an L3, but that's oral... My little gal is right at a year and still nursing pretty frequently. Thanks for your help!

Clindamycin Topical?

Dear the_select,
Clindamycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic frequently used for anaerobic infections. Dr. Hale states that absorption vaginally is exceedingly low, and transfer to breast milk is highly unlikely. Vaginal administration of clindamycin poses little to no threat to the breastfed infant.
