  • L3 for erythromycin

    Hello,

Erythromycin has a L3 code early postnatally. My question is which period is meant. Is this the first week, the first six weeks or....?

    With kind regards,
    Hester Hillegers

    Dear Ms. Hillegers,

Erythromycin should not be given to breastfeeding mothers during the first two weeks of life due to the increased risk of pyloric stenosis in their infants. Sorensen et al found that infants exposed to erythromycin via breastmilk up to 13 days post partum were found to have an eight-fold increase in the risk of pyloric stenosis. Let me know if you have further questions.

    Sincerely,
    Cindy Pride, MSN, CPNP
