  • Bactrim safety?

I was prescribed bactrim for a strep infection bc I am allergic to penicillins. My pharmacist said to pump and dump for 10days!! I am worried ten days would lead to weaning my 13 month is, and I am not ready for that!! Advice, please?

    Hi, thanks for your post.

I do not believe it is necessary to pump and dump on bactrim while feeding a 13 month old. Older children metabolize the two components in bactrim quite well. Only about 2-6% of mother's dose ends up in the breastmilk and that is far less than what is prescribed directly to infants for their own infections.

For anyone reading this, please post again or call us at the InfantRisk Center, (806)352-2519, if this has not completely answered your question. I would also appreciate you filling out a 2 minute survey about your time on the forum:
