  • Flagyl

    Hi,
I am trying to find information about flagyl stability in frozen breastmilk. Have a mum with a prem baby, mother is on flagyl for wound infection, was breastfeeding the baby and giving the fresh EBM, however, baby started having gastrointestinal side effects (loose stool and colic). So now there is a stockpile of frozen EBM from the time she has been on the antibiotics. Would freezing the milk change the stability of the drug that was in the milk or not?
    Thanks.

    Hi, thanks for your post.

I have consulted with Dr. Hale and we agree that the Flagyl in the stored EBM is probably still potent enough to cause problems. Freezing the milk has probably kept the drug from degrading as quickly. We recommend that you discard the milk if the baby is having significant side effects from Flagyl exposure.

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question.*(806)352-2519
