• When to give breast milk after doxycycline?

I recently had acute Lyme disease symptoms (large bull eyes, chills, body aches and headache, neck pain) and tested positive reactive to Lyme antibody.

I was prescribed doxycycline mon BID for 21 days. I was told to pump and dump. My newborn is 26 days old, and he was mostly drinking ready-to-feed formula anyway due to low milk supply and difficulty with latching.

After finishing the doxy, I want to continue pumping and bottle-feed breast milk. How many days after the last day of doxy is safe?

It's really common to be told to pump and discard for the 21 day doxycycline regimen with doxycycline. I suspect it's because we're taught to avoid directly giving doxycycline (and other tetracyclines) in pediatrics to prevent dental staining.

What providers usually don't know is that doxycycline is considered acceptable even in young kids for short courses (up to 21 days). At the InfantRisk Center, we don't recommend pumping and discarding milk at all for up to 21 days of maternal doxycycline--we support continued breastfeeding.

See the section "Evidence for lack of dental staining" from the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/rocky-mountain-spotted-fever/hcp/data-research/index.html

I hope you feel better soon,
