While it isn't ideal, the benefits are still likely to outweigh the risks. We still don't have as much data as we would like on the off-target effects of the drug; there are not many known adverse reactions. Nirmatrelvir probably does transfer into milk to a degree but from what we currently know about it there isn't a reason for concern. Ritonavir is well studied and has low transfer. A short 5-day course of Paxlovid is unlikely to cause long-term harm to the infant.

Hi Kamy,

We don't think this large drug should pass easily into breastmilk. Especially with an older baby, the benefit will most likely be much greater than the risks.

Hello, I’ve tested positive for covid and my gastroenterologist recommended I start a 5 day course of Paxlovid as I’m immune compromised due to Crohn’s disease and the medication I take. Is there any information on breastfeeding safety?
I breastfeed my 2.5 year old - mostly at night.
