  • Diclofenac and Breastfeeding

Hi there, I've been prescribed Diclofenac Sodium EC (generic for Voltaren, I believe), 75mg tabs, twice a day for my pain from degenerative disc disease. I am nursing my 18 month old daughter 3x per day. I believe I only produce about 4-5 oz a day. Do I need to discontinue breastfeeding? Thanks for any insight!

    Aripley01,

Diclofenac is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The reported amount of transfer in breast milk is probably too low to affect your infant. Monitor for vomiting and diarrhea.

      Hi,
what about ketoprofen? I had nail ablation yesterday due to paronychia and I'm breastfeeding 2,5 months old baby.
      Thank you, kind regards

        Iskra,

Ketoprofen is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount that transfers into breast milk is 0.3% of your dose. This low amount of transfer will probably not affect your infant, but still monitor for vomiting or diarrhea.

Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used as an active ingredient in several different prescription medications. At this time, it is unknown if the medicine is safe for use in breastfeeding women.
