    Dear Mary,
The ingredients in cystoprotek seem to be compatible with breastfeeding, however, because the drug is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) we cannot fully comment on its safety. Quercetin and rutin are flavonoids that are naturally occurring in fruits and vegestables, however, because they are herbals and are not regulated by the FDA we can't say they are safe. Sodium hyalonurate is a sodium salt of hyaluronan which is used to coat the bladder lining in the treatment of interstitial cystitis. Its effectiveness when given orally has not been determined. Finally, glucosamine sulfate and chrondroitin sulfate are commonly used together. They are found in dietary supplements used as an alternative medicine to treat osteoarthritis. I am not familiar with its use in treating interstitial cystitis. In summary, we don't think this drug will affect a breastfed baby, but we simply don't have enough data at this time to comment on its safety. I hope this is helpful.
    Sincerely,
    Maria Milla, MD

Is cystoprotek safe while breastfeeding? It is a supplement used for interstitial cystitis. It contains quercetin, rutin, glucosamine sulfate, chrondroitin sulfate, and sodium hyalonurate.
