Martrin83, thanks for posting,
Codeine is now rated an L4-possibly hazardous. They have found that some mothers are ultra rapid metabolizers and instead of the infant receiving 0.6-8.1% of the moms dose the infant receives up to 20% of the moms dose and subsequently the infants were having respiratory issues such as apnea. Codeine has a half life of 2.9 hours, so we recommend waiting 3-6 hours to breastfeed after taking a dose, and we recommend not using the codeine for more than 5 days. Monitor the infant closely for sedation, slowed breathing rate/apnea, pallor, constipation and any discoloration around the mouth. If your infant has a history of apnea use with extreme caution. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions please call the InfantRisk Center at 806-352-2519. Thanks,
Sandra Lovato R.N.
