  • Medical cannabis use and breastfeeding

I'm a Finnish IBCLC and reg midwife. I got a question from breastfeeding mother with chronic neurological pain. At the moment she is using opioids to treat her condition, but she is trying to find alternative options of pain medication. She asked if medical cannabis could be used during breastfeeding. Does it differ in effects to infant to the ones of "drug" cannabis or does the usage route make any difference?

We flatly recommend against the chronic use of any strain or derivative of cannabis, including Marinol, in breastfeeding women. There is enough published data to suggest that cannabis exposure through the breastmilk has the potential to cause neuro-developmental consequences in the baby. There is not enough evidence to conclude that any particular breeding technique, extraction method, commercial packaging, or route of administration is capable of satisfactorily mitigating that risk. Many other treatments for chronic neurological pain have been established as safe in breastfeeding women.
