  • Baclofen for Small Fiber Neuropathy

My client was told not to use Baclofen for her muscle spasms related to her SFN while breastfeeding. The most recent edition of Hale's lists it as an L2 for baby. Several comments on this forum suggest it is contraindicated for use in breastfeeding due to impact on prolactin potentially reducing supply but those posts are 10 years old. Any new ideas on Baclofen since then? Cheers.

Hi Betsy--the theory of baclofen's impact on prolactin comes from animal models. I haven't heard of it happening in humans in reality. We've got a few different studies that suggest that doses up to 80 mg per day transfer into breastmilk to a fairly low degree, so we consider it unlikely to cause infant harm.
