  • Lidocaine injected into breast for breast biopsy while breastfeeding

    Hello!

What is the current stand on breastfeeding after getting a breast biopsy and/or aspiration with lidocaine used for the procedure in the breast? Does mother need to pump and dump at all on the affected breast for any time after the procedure?

    Thank you!

If they infuse lidocaine (without epinephrine), then they should probably wait for 12 hours before breastfeeding. Pump and dump milk. IF they still have analgesic effect, they may have used other local anesthetics, not lidocaine. Lidocaine dissipates quickly and is broken down in a few hours. Just wait until sensation returns before breastfeeding.

In reality, lidocaine is not readily dangerous taken orally.

To clarify, there will not be an IV infusion, just a local in the breast of Lidocaine (without Epinepherine). So in this case, just have her resume breastfeeding after sensation returns, a few hours after procedure, on the affected breast?

      Thank you !

Yes, after sensation has returned is probably ok. I'd pump and discard ONCE before your return to full breastfeeding.
