  • Subutex and Breastfeeding

I am taking 16 mgs of Subutex per day and am breastfeeding my newborn. I was told it was fine, by my doctor, because baby will not get very much through my milk. My question is if the Subutex could lower my milk supply?

    Dear Jen88

Studies thus far clearly show buprenorphine (subutex) levels in milk are subclinical. Less than 2% of the dose transfers into milk and less than a third of this would be absorbed orally. Lowering milk supply is not a known side effect, however it was mentioned in one study where continuous epidural bupivacaine and buprenorphine were used in post cesarean women for 3 days, it was suggested that buprenorphine (subutex) may suppress the production of milk (and infant weight gain) although this was not absolutely clear.

Hope this helps! For further questions please contact the InfantRisk Center at 806-352-2519.
