Is it ok to take Melatonin supplements while breastfeeding? Also I would be feeding the baby 4-5 hours after taking it.

Yes it should be ok. Melatonin is rated a L3 - No Data-Probably Compatible. Melatonin is a normal hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the human brain. It is known to be passed into human milk and is believed responsible for entraining the newborn brain to phase shift its circadian clock to that of the mother. The effect of orally administered melatonin on newborns is unknown, but melatonin has thus far not been associated with significant untoward effects. Monitor baby for drowsiness. It is half way out of your system in 30-50 minutes. Breast feed or pump first, then take it right after. That will help limit exposure to it.
