My fertility doctor prescribed Cryselle (norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol). Dr. Hale’s book says “avoid†in a chart in the back of the book and no other information. I’m finding conflicting information online. Is there an alternative I can request? I’m still breastfeeding my 13 month old and we are starting IVF. Thanks.

We recommend avoiding estrogen-based contraceptives early postpartum. At contraceptive doses, the risk applies strictly to your milk supply and not to the infant. There is data that suggests that after the first few months estrogen-containing contraceptives should no longer affect milk supply, but many moms and lactation consultants disagree. Increased prolactin levels from breastfeeding suppress ovulation, so the overall risk-benefit balance in your case would likely lean toward taking the medication.
