  • dexamethasone vs prednisone for treatment of ITP and breastfeeding

I am currently receiving 80mg of prednisone for 7 days while breastfeeding my 5.5 month old daughter. I took the medicine at 2pm and pumped and dumped until feeding her at 2am. How long does it stay in my milk? Is 7 days and 80mg too high of a dose for too long to breastfeed? Should I bottle feed her stored milk instead?

If this medicine does not work then I will receive dexamethasone at 28mg for four days. Is there any research regarding breastfeeding and dexamethasone?

Do you have any thoughts on this?

    Thanks!

If you wait 12 hours AFTER taking the prednisone, then the transfer to your infant should be minimal. Basically it goes into milk at 1 hour, and is largely gone by 8-10 hours.
