I am wondering if it safe to take zzquil while pumping. My infant is 5 days old and I am struggling with sleep and my md suggested zzquil. Is this safe?

    Lindsay,

Surprisingly, we don't have a lot of data on the common medication diphenhydramine (otherwise known as zzquil or Benadryl). It is likely to transfer to breastmilk to a moderate degree, but the drug can be used in infants when necessary in larger doses than they would get through milk. Diphenhydramine is sedating (which is why it helps with sleep) but could impair your ability to take care of the infant.

There are anecdotal reports of diphenhydramine decreasing milk supply.
