  • Valacyclovir at high dosage and breastfeeding

I'm currently breastfeeding my 5 month old full time. I get frequent cold sores and am wondering if it's ok to take the cold sore dose of valacyclovir - 4 grams now, 4 grams 12 hours later - whenever I get an outbreak (1-2x a month)? Also, does waiting longer before feeding (2-3 hours) reduce the amount of medication that is ingested by the baby? Thanks!

Sorry I meant 2 grams now, 2 grams later.

      Wendy:

Because it peaks at 1.5 hours in your blood and at 4 hours in your milk, I'm not sure waiting 3-4 hours is going to help much. But the active metabolite (acyclovir) is so poorly absorbed (about 15-30%), I doubt this exposure is going to bother your infant.
