  • Depomedrol during breastfeeding

    Dear Dr.Hale,

I suffer from RA and have been on Enbrel throughout my pregnancy and post partum. I have been pumping and feeding my baby girl from the beginning. She is 6 months and 2 weeks old now. Lately I have been having a lot of flare ups due to the snow and cold weather. I was asked to take prednisone but since that didn't help, I was given a depomedrol 80mg injection. How safe am I to take these medications while I'm supplementing my baby with breastmilk?

I was advised it's safe and only a small amount of the drug gets into the breastmilk. But I'm concerned whether this small amount is harmful for my baby on the long run. A little medication in the breastmilk is definitely different from no medication at all, right? So will this affect my baby later on in her life?

Would it be safer to stop breastmilk completely and supplement with formula instead?
