  • Solumedrol and Breastfeeding

I am in the process of weaning my 6 month old son and had an MS relapse. I am breast feeding 3 times a day right now, but have to start 1 g solumedrol daily for 4 days followed by a prednisone taper. I've head mixed things about whether I can continue breast feeding or if I should just stop cold turkey. Help please!

    Hi, thanks for your post.

We know that high doses of steroids can potentially be a problem for the baby, but we don't really know where the cutoff is between safe and not safe. The most reasonable and conservative thing is to not feed/pump for 12 hours after taking your dose while you are on the solumedrol and the high end of the prednisone taper. It is not necessary to discard your milk. Starting at about 40-60mg/day of the prednisone, you can breastfeed as normal. Steroids are discussed in more detail at the link below.
