  • Collagen Hydrolysate, bovine,Great Lakes Gelatin Co.,

I have a patient that was recently diagnosed with MS and is starting a strict diet initially to avoid medications. It has been recommended to her to take Great Lakes Gelatin Co, Collagen Hydrolysate, bovine. She was instructed to take it in a glass 3-4 times a day. Her son is 10 months old, and would like to continue nursing him as long as she can. I can't find any info on it.

    Hi, thanks for your post.

Collagen-based gelatin is on an FDA list of products that are "Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS)." The FDA is SUPER conservative when it comes to giving products this status. Most of these products don't make it into our reference materials because they are so far below the level of concern for breastfeeding safety that we don't need to research it. Your patient can use this gelatin as much as she wants, although I wouldn't give it directly to the child.

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question.*(806)352-2519
