  • Breastfeeding with Balsalazide

Newly diagnosed with UC and have been permanently prescribed Balsalazide Disodium 750 MG CP (three capsules three times a day). Also, Canasa suppositories for 30 days. What are your thoughts on taking these medications while breastfeeding? I have been on both for about two weeks and have noticed no change in my 12 week old's stool. Please advise.

Also, any information on taking Balsalazide Disodium while conceiving and while pregnant?

    Casey:

Balsalazide and canasa are just formes of mesalamine. Mesalamine has been extensively used in breastfeeding mothers without a problem. That said, I'd like to ask you to go to my website and enroll in my Mesalamine study. It's simple, we just collect small samples of milk from you at specified times.

Lastly, watch your infant for watery diarrhea. I've only heard of one case...but just FYI.
