  • Edible Cannabis & Breastfeeding

"Foods containing cannabis" is our big problem now because mothers unintentionally consumed foods such as noodle and soup that added cannabis leaves. Please suggest the duration that mothers should pump and dump.
    Thank you very much.

    Lactation Clinic:

As for pumping and dumping, this is somewhat variable and depends to a large degree on HOW MUCH the mother ingests. Generally, the ORAL absorption of THC is only 1-5%, so it oral absorption is really quite poor. 95% of THC is sequestered in t he liver and metabolized. But if used repeatedly, you can get enough absorbed to have 'clinical' symptoms. Its all a matter of dose and repeating this dose.

If the mom were to ingest large daily sums of cannabis, then it would not be advisable to breastfeed. If it were only a random occasional use, then waiting 24 hours would largely remove the risk of THC in the moms milk.
