  • IV Contrast - Omnipaque and OmniMix

Hi! Postpartum mom received IV contrast today for a scan - Omnipaque 300 IV and Omni Mix 5% oral. Mom is pumping for a 5 week old infant. Is this safe? Does she need to pump and dump? Thanks!

    Hi, thanks for your post.

Iodinated contrast media are specifically designed to stay in the body water and not to penetrate compartments like the brain or breastmilk. Discarding milk for two hours after the procedure should be enough to reduce the levels in your milk down to almost nothing. What little makes it to the baby will likely not be absorbed by him anyway. These recommendations are in line with the current guidelines from the American College of Radiology.

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question. (806)352-2519
